Trauma Sensitive Schools: A New Perspective on Student Behavior and Learning (A Learning Series)

Audience: Any educator looking to learn more about how trauma impacts student behavior and learning in the classroom.

Description:

More than two out of three children report exposure to a traumatic event before the age of 16. This has potential to have a lasting impact on the well-being and functioning of students and their families. By understanding how trauma impacts students and opting a trauma-informed approach, educators can play a crucial role in mitigating both the short- and long-term effects of trauma. This interactive workshop will leave educators with a renewed commitment to reach some of the most vulnerable students and their families.

Objectives: Upon completion of Trauma Sensitive Schools Training, participants will:

  1. Understand the term child traumatic stress and know what types of experiences constitute childhood trauma,
  2. Understand the impact of trauma on the brain development and behavior of children,
  3. Learn how the impact of traumatic stress can be prevented and/or mitigated by use of trauma-informed responses and strategies,
  4. Identify “secondary traumatic stress” and learn strategies for taking care of you, and
  5. Describe a framework for creating a “trauma-informed” culture.


Trauma Sensitive Schools: Trainer Cohort

Audience: Educators looking to support their school/district in building capacity to deliver the Trauma Sensitive Schools professional learning curriculum with local context.

Description:

Trauma Sensitive Schools: A New Perspective on Student Behavior and Learning professional learning curriculum equips educators with an understanding of childhood trauma, how trauma impacts the developing brain, and how to support students exposed to trauma in the classroom while supporting themselves. Participation in the Trainer Cohort is an opportunity to earn a lifetime credential to deliver the Trauma Sensitive Schools professional learning curriculum with fidelity in local context, and to become part of a statewide network of trainers that includes ongoing technical assistance and support.

Objectives: Upon completion of the Trauma Sensitive Schools Trainer Cohort, participants will:

  1. Deliver the TSS professional learning curriculum with confidence,
  2. Understand how to access the ND TSS Trainer Network,
  3. Access trauma-related resources, and
  4. Promote the Trauma Sensitive Schools professional learning curriculum.

Time

Trauma Sensitive Schools: Learning Series - Five-Module series (June 23, 24, 25) 

  • Monday, June 23rd from 8:30-12:30 (Mod 1 & 2)
  • Tuesday, June 24th from 8:30-12:30 (Mod 3 & 4) 
  • Wednesday, June 25th from 8:30-10:30 (Mod 5)

Trauma Sensitive Schools: Trainer Cohort (June 25, 26, 27) 

  • Wednesday, June 25th from 10:30-12:00 (Trainer Launch) 
  • Thursday, June 26th from 1:00-3:00 PM (Resource Review) 
  • Friday, June 27th from 8:30-11:30 AM (Teach-Back)

Trauma Sensitive Schools: Learning Series AND Trainer Cohort

The Trauma Sensitive Schools Learning Series curriculum is a composition of five modules related to trauma. Over the course of three mornings, you'll learn and understand how trauma impacts students AND how to adopt a trauma-informed approach. 

The Trauma Sensitive Schools Trainer Cohort is the opportunity to become a trainer of the curriculum to assist their schools in supporting students and families exposed to trauma. 

Requirements to become a TSS trainer include:

  • Participation in the Trauma Sensitive Schools professional learning series June 23th, 24th, and 25th with completion of accompanying Notes Catcher.

  • Completion of Independent Study Log, diving deep into the structure of the professional learning curriculum.

  • Participation in a cohort resource review on June 26th

  • Completion of a teach-back session to gain positive feedback from peers on content delivery on June 27th.  

Participants can choose to attend the five module LEARNING SERIES without completing the Trainer Cohort (TSS Trainer Certification). More information will be provided in registration.

Graduate Credit will be available upon for the Learning Series (1 credit) and Learning Series + Trainer Cohort (2 credits). More information will be sent to participants.  

Trauma Sensitive Schools was created and disseminated in partnership with Nexus-PATH, the Central Region Education Association, and the Department of Public Instruction.
