NESC - 2025-2026 Explicit Instruction Workshop Series

Description

Research shows that explicit instruction – instruction that is systematic, direct, engaging, and success-oriented – promotes achievement for all students. Educators will learn to design lessons that target critical content, break down complex skills, and provide structured practice. They will also explore research-based strategies to engage learners and maximize instructional time. This training series supports educators in intentionally planning instruction using the core elements of Explicit Instruction. Participants will learn to design lessons that prioritize critical ND Standards, and plan for whole group, small group, and individual delivery. They will develop plans for clear modeling, guided practice, opportunities to respond, feedback, and checks for understanding to maximize instructional time and inform next steps. In addition, educators will intentionally plan for varied practice opportunities—such as fluency building, cumulative review, spaced practice, and retrieval practice - to ensure retention and transfer of student learning.

Participants will: 1. Understand the elements of explicit instruction 2. Identify the elements of explicit instruction 3. Create a plan for including the elements of explicit instruction in lesson design and delivery

Audience: Participants may include administrators, classroom educators, and support educators (strategists, interventionists, Title, instructional coaches, etc.). Schools may bring their entire staff, an elementary or secondary team, or a teaching team.

Dates: 

•Session 1: January 16, 2026, 1-3:30 p.m.
•Session 2: February 13, 2026, 1-3:30 p.m.
•Session 3: April 2, 2026, 1-3:30 p.m.
•Explicit Instruction is a three-part, in-person professional learning series.
