The Trauma Sensitive Schools (TSS): A New Perspective on Student Behavior and Learning professional learning curriculum provides educators with knowledge related to trauma, its effects on students and learning, strategies for interacting with students exposed to trauma, and strategies for taking care of oneself when interacting with students who have been exposed to trauma.

One in four children attending school has been exposed to a traumatic event that may have a lasting impact on learning and behavior, including overall functioning and well-being. By understanding how trauma impacts students and families, along with adopting a trauma-informed approach, educators can play a crucial role in mitigating both the short and long-term effects of trauma. The Trauma Sensitive Schools interactive professional learning curriculum will leave educators with a renewed commitment to reach some of the most vulnerable students and their families.

Objectives of the Trauma Sensitive Schools: A New Perspective on Student Behavior and Learning professional learning curriculum:

  1. Understand the term child traumatic stress and know what types of experiences constitute childhood trauma.
  2. Understand the impact of trauma on the brain development and behavior of children.
  3. Learn how the impact of traumatic stress can be prevented and/or mitigated by use of trauma-informed responses and strategies.
  4. Identify “secondary traumatic stress” and learn strategies for taking care of you
  5. Describe a framework for creating a “trauma-informed” culture.

Trauma Sensitive Schools was created and disseminated in partnership with Nexus-PATH Family Healing, the Central Regional Education Association, South-East Education Cooperative, and the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction. TSS qualifies toward mandatory ND school behavioral health professional learning requirements.
